Performer on stage in theater

In this 3 part article series I will be showing you the best and easy ways to overcome the fear of public speaking for your next speech or presentation at work, school and anywhere else you might have to stand in front of a crowd!

 The 4th big secret is…

its time to loosen up. You need to relax or else you might have a panic attack and just flop. Relaxing is the art of letting go. There are many ways to let go that have been shown that work tremendously:

  • You can imagine you’re made of rubber .
  • Or you can sit in front of a mirror and make a horse’s laugh with your lips.
  • Why not lie on the ground and pretend you’re floating?
  • Or, just collapse on the ground like a limp doll. Letting go un-tenses the body and makes you more at ease and relaxed.

Another great technique is called “The wall push” and  was a technique used by Yul Brynner, star of the musical “The King and I”. And if done properly can totally reduce your high levels of stress when its time to present.  This is what you do:

  • Stand about 18″ away from a wall and place your palms flat on it.
  • Push against the wall. As you push, your abdominal muscles will contract. As you breathe out, hiss and contract the muscles below your rib cage as if you were rowing a boat against the current.
  • Do this a few times, and you’ll banish all feelings of stage-fright

The 5th big secret is…

Visualize your success. Imagine that your presentation/speech will be awesome. Positive thoughts can help decrease some of your negativity about your social performance and relieve some anxiety. Rather than creating larger-than-life barriers in your mind and dwelling on everything that might go wrong during your presentation you should envision yourself victorious and really picture yourself as the greatest person who has the ability to give that specific speech.

The truth is, if you can’t picture doing well on the presentation, chances are you won’t.

The more vivid you can get, the better it will work for you. Start thinking a couple of weeks in advance before you speak in front of the crowd  of how amazing you will definitely be!  Spend about 10 to 15 minutes picturing yourself achieving and doing the best you can before its the big day.

The 6th big secret is…

Know and give the best introduction you can! The introduction for any speech is crucial because they are meant to capture the audience’s attention and get them on board so they can continue to listen to you. So now that we know how important introductions are its significant to make your introduction excellent and engaging .

But the most critical part is to begin the speech/presentation with your strong introduction without any hesitation.

You want to flow nicely during your  speaking time and once you start and the beginning you prepared is top-notch, you will notice that the remainder of your time will be much easier because you knew your intro by heart. Did you know that after 30 seconds it has been shown that nerves decrease tremendously. Most of the nerves go away and now you are taking the audience on a ride that will make them be on the edge of their seat!
